Paleo Fried Apples

As a little girl, I remember sitting in my grandmother’s old kitchen and talking with her as she cooked dinner for us all. There was a window over the sink where she stood peeling potatoes or apples, and it looked out over a large field. She would point to different spots in the field and tell stories about my mom and her siblings when they were little. Her heart-warming stories were always followed up by a belly-warming meal. Her fried chicken was always accompanied by delicious sides like mac and cheese, coleslaw, and of course, fried apples. Eating fried apples still harkens back those wonderful memories, and I’d like to pass those on to my kids when I tell them stories about their grandma. At the same time, I don’t feel totally comfortable with the ingredients (i.e. tons of sugar) contained in most traditional fried apple recipes.

These paleo fried apples are naturally sweetened with date syrup and can be made with any apples you have on hand. They come together quickly, and will be a favorite around the dinner table!

“These naturally sweetened Fried Apples were inspired by the fried apples I ate twice when I visited Cracker Barrel, a restaurant and old country store a couple of weeks ago. It was right across the street from the Gaylord Convention Center in Nashville when I was over there a couple of weeks ago for a work conference.

I bet their fried apples were not paleo at all due to the white sugar and possible cornstarch in the ingredient list but it was still a better choice over their pancakes and french toast. It tasted so good with my double meat breakfast (bacon, smoked sausage and eggs) and I knew it was worth the indulgence!

I recreated this healthier version using the Date Syrup I shared earlier this week. This is my sweetener of choice since its not tooth-achingly sweet making it perfect for my palate.

You can use any type of apples but I prefer the granny smith variety for their tart flavor that mellows out and blends nicely with the date syrup.”

Jenny Castaneda

My name is Jenny and I live in Southern California with my husband D and our grain-free cat Mochi. I’ve embraced the Paleo lifestyle when I read about the numerous health benefits of eating real whole foods. A few weeks after making this transition I experienced positive effects such as increased energy, better sleep, no more bloating and heartburn. I started this blog to share my recipes with family and friends. It is also a way to keep myself on track and connect with other fellow Paleo friends who have provided daily doses of inspiration and motivation as I make this journey towards a Paleo lifestyle. When I am not in the kitchen whipping up a feast, I enjoy traveling, Broadway musicals, and swinging kettlebells.
